Prime Minister Highlights Key Aspects of Health Sector Amidst COVID-19 Crisis

Phnom Penh, March 19, 2024 – In a recent address at the closing ceremony of the 2023 work review meeting and the 2024 work direction of the Ministry of Health, Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia underscored two critical facets revealed by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis: the true capacity of healthcare workers and the pressing need for infrastructure and human resource development within the nation's health sector.

Speaking on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the importance of assessing the capabilities of healthcare professionals across Cambodia, noting that each country must rely on its own resources, particularly in the healthcare domain, to address emerging challenges. He highlighted the significance of robust healthcare systems in the face of crises, as international assistance may not always be readily available.

Acknowledging the efforts of the Royal Government led by former Prime Minister Hun Sen in effectively managing the COVID-19 situation, the Prime Minister cautioned that insufficient healthcare capacity could potentially lead to higher infection and mortality rates. He commended the dedication and competence of Cambodian healthcare workers, expressing pride in their ability to save lives despite the challenges encountered.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Hun Manet identified shortcomings in the health sector, particularly in human resource development, deployment, and the capacity of health units at the sub-national level. He emphasized the need for continued investment in training and skill development, as well as the enhancement of essential infrastructure such as oxygen production facilities and patient transport services.

The COVID-19 crisis, according to the Prime Minister, has served as a catalyst for both recognizing the strengths and addressing the weaknesses of Cambodia's healthcare system. He emphasized the importance of addressing these deficiencies as a priority in the government's agenda moving forward.

As Cambodia navigates through the complexities of the pandemic, the Prime Minister's remarks underscore the imperative of investing in healthcare infrastructure, bolstering human resources, and fostering resilience to effectively combat future health crises.
